More than any other battle of the Civil War — perhaps more than any other battle in history — Gettysburg has elicited scores of “what if” questions. The belief that Gettysburg was the decisive battle of the war has led to endless speculation about how it might have come out differently and so changed the outcome of the war. Some of the “what if” questions are based on things that, by the time of the battle, were impossible. But what about alternative courses of events that were possible and maybe even probable. What if we could construct an alternative course for the battle and a different outcome at Gettysburg, based not on time machines or miracles, but on two separate decisions that were more probable than what actually happened. What might have changed about the war?
We are starting off the year with one of our favorites -Dr. Steven Woodworth- giving us an alternative history of what could have happened at Gettysburg if Lee had won. There has been much speculation on this since the battle in 1863. Don’t miss Dr. Woodworth’s interpretation. See you there!
