The Petersburg Campaign featured U. S. Grant and Robert E. Lee -two of the best-known Generals of the Civil War, but it also included a number of relatively obscure commanders. Some of these leaders rose to the occasion and performed admirably – some were miserable failures. This talk will examine a couple of dozen of the prominent men who guided the conduct of the action at Petersburg, using the words of the people who knew them personally and whose opinions were often unfiltered.
A. Wilson Greene has retired from a 44-year career in public history. He worked for sixteen years in the National Park Service, was the first director of the predecessor of what is now the American Battlefield Trust, and was the founding director of Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War. The author of seven books on Civil War history, his latest project is a three-volume history of the Petersburg Campaign. Will resides in Walden, Tennessee.
