Her presentation will include a focus on the motivation of Kentucky soldiers in the Civil War, including some Kentucky born Texans. As a border state that held familial and economic ties to both the North and South, Kentuckians found themselves in a difficult situation as southern states began to secede and the Civil War broke out. Because Kentucky first declared neutrality, Kentuckians could not simply follow their state as other southerners could. Instead, they had to choose which army to serve in based upon their own convictions. Dr. Tarwater will discuss what motivated these men to enlist in the opposing armies.
Dr. Leah Tarwater is an adjunct professor of history at Liberty University where she has taught in the doctoral program since 2019. Prior to that, she taught at Hill College, Tarrant County College, Texas Wesleyan University, and the University of Southern New Hampshire. Dr. Tarwater earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education at Texas Tech University. She went on to earn a M.A. and doctorate in history from TCU in 2010 where her dissertation focused on Kentuckians in the Civil War.
Dr. Tarwater comes highly recommended. This should be a great presentation with insights into the decision-making process of common soldiers. Don’t miss it!
